Why animal milk must not be given to infants less than one year of age?

Infants under one year of age should not be given animal milk as their main source of nutrition. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics, World Health Organisation, American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other health organizations recommend breastfeeding or formula feeding for infants during their first year of life.

Here are the key reasons why animal milk, including cow's milk, is not recommended for infants under one year:

Nutritional Insufficiency: Animal milk, especially cow's milk, lacks some essential nutrients that are crucial for the optimal growth and development of infants during their first year. These include iron, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids.

Excessive Protein and Sodium: Cow's milk contains higher levels of protein and sodium, which can put a strain on the immature kidneys of infants, potentially leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

Difficult Digestibility: The proteins in animal milk are harder for an infant's digestive system to break down compared to the proteins in breast milk or formula. This difficulty in digestion can lead to gastrointestinal issues and irritation.

Inadequate Fat Content: Infants require a higher fat content in their diet for brain development, and animal milk doesn't provide the appropriate balance of fats for a growing baby.

Risk of Allergic Reactions: Cow's milk protein is a common allergen. Introducing animal milk too early may increase the risk of developing allergies and intolerances. Breast milk and formula are specifically designed to be hypoallergenic and suitable for infants.

Iron Absorption Interference: The high levels of calcium in cow's milk can interfere with the absorption of iron, potentially leading to iron deficiency anemia in infants.

For infants under one year of age:

Breast milk or Formula: Breast milk is the ideal choice for infant nutrition, providing optimal nutrition and immune support. If breastfeeding is not possible, formula specifically designed for infants is an appropriate alternative.

Introduce Whole Milk After One Year: Whole cow's milk can be introduced as a main drink after the child's first birthday, once they are eating a varied and balanced diet. Consult with a pediatrician to determine when and how to transition to whole milk.

Always consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that your baby is receiving the appropriate nutrition based on their individual needs and developmental stage.
