During sleep, a small baby must sleep on his or her back. This is because, there is an increased risk of sudden infant death, known as SIDS, when babies sleep on their tummies. The bed of the baby must be firm. Soft beds are strongly not recommended because they can form pockets which can lead to carbon-di-oxide re-breathing. The bedspread must be firm and no bibs or toys or any other objects be placed on the baby bed while the baby is sleeping. The space between crib bars must be optimum so that the baby must not get stuck in between the bars. Quilts, comforters, stuffed toys and pillows are not recommended for babies. Instead proper sleep clothing suitable for the climate is what is needed. In case a blanket has to be used, the blanket must be tucked around the crib mattress in such a way that it reaches only the chest of the baby. The head of the baby must be uncovered during sleep. Smoking around baby, especially when baby is sleeping must be avoided completely as it increases the risk of SIDS. There are certain devices in the market which claim to reduce the risk of SIDS. But they may not be effective and it is not worth relying completely on them.
