Newborn Handling at Delivery
The delivery, whether normal or cesarean, will be attended by a qualified pediatrician. It is important for you to confirm with your obstetrician about the same before delivery. Pediatrician will assess the risks for the baby and will be prepared to handle any expected and unexpected emergencies like fetal distress. In case the baby does not cry immediately after birth, the pediatrician will help the baby cry within first few minutes so that adequate oxygenation of brain and other vital organs happens. There is no need to clean the baby. The umbilical cord will be cut and baby will be put on mother's chest as soon as possible. It is at this juncture that the pediatrician will explain about the health of the baby and further course of action which may be needed. Birth weight will be checked immediately. Vitamin K injection is mandatory and it is universal protocol to administer it. complete examination of the baby may be done immediately or within few minutes of delivery.
